Sri Mahabodhi - The Sacred Bo tree

The Sri Mahabodhi was brought to Srilanka by Sangamitta Thera in the 3rd century BC. She was the daughter of king Ashoka of India and she was the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns in Srilanka. King Devanampiya Tissa was the ruler of Srilanka who was based at the capital of Anuradhapura at that time. Being 2500 years old , Sri Mahabodhi is the oldest tree in the world according to the history. In Anuradhapura we have the right side branch of Jaya Sri Mahabodhi in Bodhgaya in India. It is believed that Lord Buddha attained realization of the four noble truths at the foot of Jaya Sri Mahabodhi in India.
The original branch is smaller in size and there are 52 "parivara" bodhis around the sacred bo- tree. Sri Mahabodhi is one of the most sacred relics of Buddhists in Srilanka and it is respected by buddhists all over the world.
